The Art of Seymour Fogel: An Atavistic Vision
The definitive work on the artist's life in art

Charles and Faith McCracken, with Jared A. Fogel, collaborated to write the definitive book on Seymour Fogel's astonishingly prolific career. This limited edition is available exclusively through this site.

It is the hope of the publisher that this book will serve as the definitive reference for museums, libraries, art collectors and all others interested in the rediscovery of this American master.

When Fogel died in 1984, he left behind a staggering amount of artwork. Along with the art were stored numerous sketchbooks, unpublished manuscripts, exhibition catalogs and mural studies. To write this book, the authors thoroughly reviewed this material and another large collection of research material in the Archives of American Art in Washington, D.C. Additionally, museums and mural sites were visited and art professionals who knew Fogel were interviewed.

This book features more than one hundred full-color reproductions of Fogel's paintings, drawings and sculpture. The artwork was selected to reference all of Fogel's artistic periods and styles from the 1930s to the 1980s. The book's scholarly text presents a biographical account of Fogel's career and an essay on Fogel's search for a pure, nonrational, elemental form of visual communication that he termed "atavistic." The book concludes with an appendix of summary pages that present Fogel's career at a glance and support further research.

The 104-page book is printed on archival paper via four-color lithography. It includes two foil-stamped divider pages and a three-panel foldout. The book is bound by hand in black Japanese book cloth and blind stamped with a full-color, foil-stamped medallion on the cover. Endpapers are printed in full color on Strathmore Pastelle paper. The book is housed in a custom-made red, black and transparent acrylic slipcase measuring 9.5" x 12.5". The case is designed to protect and display the book as well as hold a DVD slide show of Fogel's art and segments from a rare interview with the artist.
